## TL;DR

Google Sheets is a great place to collaborate. It is a fragile place to run a process.

- **Where Sheets is right:** Shared ad hoc work, light tracking, anything collaborative and short-lived.
- **Where it strains:** Scheduled work at volume, messy inputs, and provenance across tabs and manual pastes.
- **What Parabola adds:** Scheduled runs, AI import steps for PDFs and emailed files, version and run history, row-level data tracing.
- **What stakeholders get:** An Artifact — a live interactive view rather than a link to a tab they should not edit.
- **Bottom line:** Keep Sheets for collaboration. Move the scheduled, depended-on process to [Parabola](/).

## Collaboration is not the same as operation

Sheets solved sharing, and that is genuinely valuable — several people can look at the same numbers without emailing versions around. What it did not solve is running a process.

A sheet still has to be opened by someone. It still needs its inputs pasted or imported by hand when a partner sends a file. As the ranges grow, formulas slow down. And because anyone can edit any cell, the provenance of a figure erodes over time — a manual correction here, a hardcoded value there, and eventually nobody is sure which numbers are calculated and which were typed.

## Parabola vs. Google Sheets at a glance

| Dimension | Parabola | Google Sheets |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Runs on a schedule | Yes, or on an event trigger | Someone opens it |
| Messy inputs | AI import steps extract from PDFs, emails, and inconsistent CSVs | Manual import and cleanup |
| Volume | Built for batch operations over large datasets | Slows as ranges and formulas grow |
| Provenance | Row-level tracing; calculated values cannot be silently overwritten | Any cell can be edited by anyone |
| Sharing the result | An Artifact: interactive, branded, read-only by default | A link to a tab people can edit |
| Cost and ubiquity | A platform you adopt | Free and already everywhere |

## Which one is right for the job

Use Google Sheets for collaborative, ad hoc, short-lived work.

Move to [Parabola](/) when the sheet runs on a schedule, feeds a decision, or has quietly become something the team depends on being correct.
